Make Art! Learn How to Hand Letter

Whether it be a fancy invitation or a simple Thank You note, a beautifully written piece of art makes a great gift and embraces your unique creativity. In fact, no two people have the same handwriting style. Cool, huh? Here are some tips and tricks to get you started with learning how to hand letter: 1) Choose your weapon. Whatever you write with will give you different strokes, lines and finishes. This is a great time to experiment with any and all pencils, pens, markers and brushes. Your local art store is a great place to start! 2) Practice, practice, practice. Then practice some more. After about 2 sketchbooks worth of hand lettering practice, I started to see progress. Then after another 3 sketchbooks, I finally "got it". My lines, flow and letters looked more cohesive and relaxed. I cannot stress the importance of practicing. With anything new, the more hours you put into it, the better you'll get. It's that easy. 3) Find your style. Flowy and flourishy? Neat and tidy? Sketchy and grungy? Once you start to hand letter, you'll naturally be drawn to a certain style. Embrace this because what you're creating is 100% unique to YOU. 4) Have fun. We can be our own worst critics. Believe me, I'm a graphic designer. When you start something new, you're going to make mistakes and the final product will look nothing like what you pictured in your head...at first. The key is not take everything so seriously and just go with the flow. Let your hand and mind create to it's content and soon you'll realize you're a hand lettered master!
